A little lesson about projection screens

Chosing the right screen is decisive for the quality and cost of rear projection. Projection screens are being classified into three chief categories. The quality of the display and the price of the projection screen depends mainly on the efforts for the screen manufacturing method applied. The essential quality characteristics of projection screens:

  • usable light efficiency
  • colour reproduction
  • homogeneity & spotting
  • contrast

Optical screens

Optical screens are only such screens which bundle the impinging projected light by means of a mechanical cut (Fresnell structure/lenticular structure), deflect it and reflect it into the desired visual angle of the viewer. Here the cut provides for the controlled steering of the light.

Diffusion screens

Varieties of diffusion screens (diffuse, diffusely toned and transparent)

Diffusion screens are usually made up of a plastic screen with inserted diffusers or of a thin light scattering polymeric film (plastic) that has been fixed to a carrier screen. The mode of operation of these diffusion screens is based on light scattering at these structures, the projected light is being turned round into the viewing direction desired by the observer.

Holographic Screens

Only such screens that function on the principle of real holograms can rightly be called “holographic projections screens” (holo screens). To achieve this the holograms are etched on a holographic film that is exposed, developed and fixed and either for its protection embeded between two screens or they are laminated directly on to the carrier medium. Herewith the holograms allow the “light beam control”. These screens are being used when in addition to its projection ability the screen also has to be transparent.
